Burundi: Coup leaders concede “failure”

REASON TO SMILE: President Pierre Nkurunziza seems to have survived a dramatic coup attempt in Burundi

General Cyrille Ndayirukiye, one of the leaders of an attempted coup in Burundi has told a French news agency AFP that their plot to overthrow President Pierre Nkurunziza has failed because “majority of the military clearly want the current government to stay”.

Major General Godefroid Niyombare on Wednesday announced he was dismissing President Nkurunziza, who was in Tanzania attending a heads of state summit on the situation in his country.

President Nkurunziza has belatedly returned to his chaotic country and used his twitter handle  to thank “the police and the army  for their patriotism and the Burundian people for their patience”, but his spokesman could not confirm his whereabouts.

Throughout the day Thursday, Bujumbura was rocked by fierce fighting between government forces and coup plotters as they battled for control of the government broadcaster RTNB, the airport, and the Presidential Palace. Eventually, Nkurunziza loyalists won the fight, and killed several of the mutineers
