Music fans across Africa and beyond yesterday woke up to the sad news of the passing of a music icon, Papa Wemba, the 66 year old Congolese musician had collapsed on stage and died in the Ivorian Capital, Abidjan.

Thousands of fans took to social media to pay tribute to one of the most recognizable voice in African voice.

Wemba’s compatriot, Koffi Olomide said “It’s a catastrophe. Congolese music has been decimated, it’s been blown apart. I don’t know what to say. I refused to believe it when the Ivory Coast government official told me. To be honest, from now on, life means nothing, we are nothing.”

Songstress Angelique Kidjo expressed her shock and grief saying “I’m sad, and I’ve been struggling since the death of Prince and now we have the passing of Papa Wemba and I’m wondering what this is all about.I worked with Papa Wemba and he was a very nice, genuine soul and very shy at the same time.”

Born Jules Shungo Wembadio Pene Kikumba, Papa Wemba died while preforming at a music festival in Abidjan after suffering a fatal seizure.
