President Pierre Nkurunziza’s third term bid sparked off the current conflict

An attack by unidentified gunmen donning military uniforms and masks Saturday night killed four members of the ruling CNDD-FDD in Burundi, the party has confirmed.

The four victims were gunned down at a bar in Mugamba district, Buriri Province, South East of the capital Bujumbura, where they had gathered for a general cleaning exercise, according to the district chief Jerome Ntakarutimana.

Similar attacks in the past week claimed six other lives rising the death toll of the year-long turmoil to nearly 500. Regional leaders and the international community have tried to forge dialogue in Burundi between the government and its opponents in vain.

The current conflict began one year ago when CNDD-FDD nominated President Pierre Nkurunziza for the controversial third term igniting mass protests against the move.
