Kagame Dismisses Top Generals in new Army Reshuffle
President Paul Kagame has made major changes in the Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) appointing General Jacques Musemakweli as the new Army Chief of Staff replacing Lt. Gen. Frank Mushyo Kamanzi -who was recently appointed as the new Commander of the African Union Mission Force in Darfur, Sudan (UNAMID).
A statement released by Rwandan Defence Ministry on Monday also indicated that Major General Alex Kagame had been appointed as Commander of the Republican Guard, replacing General Jacques Musemakweli.
Maj. Gen Kagame, who has been the 4th Division commander in Southern Province, returns to the Republican Guard, an elite presidential protection unit, which he headed several years ago.
The statement also said that Maj Gen Richard Rutatina had been dismissed as the Forces’ J2 (head of military intelligence) and no reasons for his dismissal or eventual reappointment have been given.
Rwandan Army Spokesman, Gen. Joseph Nzamwita said on his twitter account that the “RDF upholds high levels of discipline.”
The army shake up , especially in Intelligence Department is believed to be one of the strategies the Rwandan government has adopted to strengthen the army at a time when it is facing threats from terrorist attacks among others. It also comes just days after one Muslim cleric was shoot dead for suspected collaboration with the Islamic state (ISIS).
