Kenyan nabbed robbing an ATM in Arusha, TZ

Police in Arusha Tanzania has arrested Kenyan national, Annuar Ally for allegedly attempting to break into an Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) outside a Barclays Bank branch near Arusha Bus Terminal.

The Bank’s Credit Officer, Regina Kitali said on Tuesday the suspected would-be robber was arrested at around 11am soon after the bank’s security guards heard a big bang from the ATM room, located outside the bank.

“After hearing a big bang, we notified the security guards, who went straight into the room, and interrogated the suspect who at that time he was busy as if he was trying to get money through his card,” she said, adding: “But, when they looked into the machine security guards found the Machine was being opened, the situation that shows that the man was trying to steal. Security guards screamed and the suspect tried to run away.”

But, police on regular patrol managed to apprehend the suspect

The bank official called upon the public and customers to take precautions soon after getting into ATM booths.

Arusha Regional Police Commander, Liberatus Sabasi, confirmed the incident, saying the man was in custody and he will be produced in local court soon after the investigation into the incident is done.

ATM thefts is a growing phenomenon in Tanzania, and it is costing banks millions of shillings in customer compensation.
