Kikwete appointed Chancellor of University of Dar es Salaam
Nearly three-months after stepping down as Tanzania’s president, Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete has been appointed the new Chancellor of University of Dar es Salaam, the country’s premier institution of higher learning.
The appointment of the 65 year-old popular former head of state who served the East African state for two consecutive—five year terms took effect on January 17.
“Kikwete will be succeeding Ambassador Fulgence Kazaura who died in India last February, “ the State House press statement issued Thursday read in part.
According to the statement the incumbent president Dr John Magufuli appointed his predecessor to the helm of the oldest university in Tanzania.
Mr. Kikwete graduated from the same institution in 1975 with a B.A in Economics. The appointment is being viewed by many as a goodwill gesture given the fact that Magufuli has taken a rather aggressive approach ‘cleaning’ Kikwete’s mess in terms of reining in out of control government spending and corruption.
