At least 130 young Rwandan beauty contestants have set their sights on becoming Miss Rwanda 2016 dethroning 20-year old Doriane Kundwa, Miss Rwanda 2015.

This year’s contest is under the theme ‘Beauty, Brains and Culture’ and will see the winner walk off with a brand new Suzuki Swift 2015 model and Rwf 800.000 monthly stipend.

The first auditions for Miss Rwanda 2016, kicked off in the Northern Province this Saturday at Virunga Hotel in Musanze district.

The selection will continue through this month in all other provinces of the country and during the preliminary auditions, the first five contestants from four provinces and Kigali City will be picked and thereafter take part in the national pageant.
Some of the metrics in this year’s competition include height of at least 1.7 meters, weight between 45 and 70 kg and age ranging from 18 to 24 years.

Besides beauty and fluency in Kinyarwanda and either English or French, the beauty queens will be drilled on current affairs & cultural issues.

The winner of the contest is set to be announced on February 27, 2016 at Camp Kigali multipurpose grounds, the new venue replace Gikondo Expo where previous events have been taking place since 2009, when the pageant was first introduced.

“The winner will this time around have to show her contribution to the community and she will be closely followed up to ensure that her plans are implemented unlike in the past” said Ishimwe Dieudonné, the Director of Rwanda Inspiration Back Up, the event organizers.

Though the event has a new look and more sponsors this year, analysts say the pageant is bound to lose sponsors and public interest if issues such as time management at the grande finale and Miss Rwanda’s community involvement are not addressed.

“We need to have the event properly managed especially time, but also we have not seen much of the works of the beauty queens in the community. It almost ends with the crowning” James Ndabivuga, a musician and photographer said.

Previous Miss Rwanda winners are Grace Bahati – 2009, Aurore Mutesi Kayibanda 2012-2013; Colombe Akiwacu -2014; Doriane Kundwa -2015
