I’M STILL PRESIDENT: Pierre Nkurunziza

A day after Majaor General Godefroid announced he was dismissing Pierre Nkurunziza as president of Burundi, there has been intense fighting in the capital Bujumbura between coup plotters and troops loyal to President Nkurunziza. Nkurunziza says he is still president of the republic and is back in the country to fight the coup.

Nkurunziza loyalists are claiming to have quelled the attempted coup and in control of the government broadcaster RTNB, Bujumbura International Airport, and the Presidency.

Today’s fierce fighting have claimed at least five people of which government forces say are coup plotters.

The attempted coup happened when Nkurunziza was in Tanzania attending a heads of state summit.
