Nyerere jr: I’m running for TZ presidency

ENTERING RING: Charles Makongoro Nyerere

The member of the East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) and son to Tanzania’s former leader late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, Charles Makongoro Nyerere will officially announce his candidacy for president next Monday.

According to a media communiqué availed to this website, Mr Nyerere will publically announce he is running for president at Mwitongo Village, in Mara’s Butiama district.

“I Charles Makongoro Nyerere, I wish to inform the esteemed public that on June 1, 2015 at 10:00 am (E.T) at Mwitongo, Butiama-Mara, will tender my bid for the Union Republic of Tanzania presidency,” reads part of the statement he issued.

Mr Nyerere, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) member, will be fighting for the party’s nomination with former premier Edward Loswata and another CCM stalwart Bernard Membe, both of whom have said will announce their bids later this week.

Nyerere’s candidacy is likely to send shockwaves with CCM’s circles but it’s not clear whether or not his announcement will affect the decisions of other potential contenders.

Nyerere, 56, a military veteran, and seasoned politician will deliver a 2-hour speech detailing his manifesto on Monday.

Tanzania’s general election will be held October 25, 2015, the National Electoral Commission (NEC) has officially announced despite widespread complaints about the glitches within in the voter registration exercise.
