At least 1724 inmates in Rubavu prison in western Rwanda have petitioned the Rwandan parliament to amend article 101 of the Rwandan constitution, to allow the president to run for a third term in office.

The group made the petition today asking that President Paul Kagame be given another seven years in office. The constitution only limits the president to two seven year terms.

The inmates, who belong to the prison’s Unity and Reconciliation club in Rubavu are also among the 3815 inmates, who include genocide convicts in Rubavu prison.

In a related development, dozens of Rwandan nationals living and working in Uganda have submitted petitions to the Rwanda High Commission in the country urging their lawmakers to amend article 101 to allow President Kagame to stand for a 3rd term.

Their call comes just weeks after Rwandans from across the political divide marched to parliament with petitions calling for the lifting of the presidential terms limit.
