Tanzania: opposition coalition edges out CCM in Dar. mayoral race

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Efforts by Tanzania’s ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) to retain top decision making posts in local government in the country’s commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, tuned futile over the weekend when it finally lost to the opposition.

In the municipal mayoral races for Ilala and Kinondoni in Dar es Salaam, Chadema secured all the posts while Civic United Front (CUF) won the deputy mayor positions.

Chadema and CUF are the two of the four parties forming UKAWA; the coalition of people’s constitution.

For the first time since independence, Dar es Salaam municipals; Ilala and Kinondoni will be under the opposition.

The opposition’s victory means the president’s office in Magogoni, Illala,  Dar es Salaam will be under opposition mayor-ship.

The new leaders Charles Kuyeko, Mayor of Ilala Municipal and Boniface Jacob of Kinondoni were unveiled Saturday in Dar es Salam.

Although UKAWA lost to the ruling party in the presidential race in last October’s general election, the coalition won more than 100 seats in parliament.
