UPDATED:Tension and gunfire paralyze Bujumbura, President Nkurunziza not in the country

Major General Godefroid Niyombare, attempted coup leader in Burundi

24 hours after Major General Godefroid Niyombare announced he was dismissing President Pierre Nkurunziza and taking over as interim president, the situation is so tense in Bujumbura. Most radio stations are shutdown as the army tries to take over government.

Radio’s Isanganiro, Bonesha and RPA, and Renaissance are all mute. People do not know exactly what’s happening.

Bujumbura was rocked by gunfire throughout the night, and all day today, and the city center is deserted.

“No one is at work, we can hear heavy gun exchanges in downtown around the National Radio where the military who mounted the coup are trying to enter it by force. We fear that telephone and internet might also be shut down”, a reliable source in Bujumbura told this website.

The National broadcaster RTNB has just been reopened after a brief shutdown, the national anthem is being played, the station is in full control of Nkurunziza loyalists. At the moment, the gunfire has stopped but Bujumbura is still empty.

President Nkurunziza, who had gone to Tanzania to attend an East African Heads of State Summit tried to return in the country but his plane was denied access to Bujumbura International Airport.

He is believed to have returned to Tanzania, there has been no communication from the president.
