The Key to continued peace and happiness

I have always told people that happiness is not the absence of problems, but the ability to manage them. It is of great benefit to keep your peace even amidst life’s challenges.

American entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker, Jim Rohn, once said that “Learn how to be happy with what you have while you pursue all that you want”. It is so true that we get so anxious when we allow ourselves to whine and whimper over things that we don’t have control over; we lose our peace, we become unhappy. Haddon W. Robinson,  the Harold John Ockenga distinguished professor of preaching also once stated that, “what worries you masters you”.

God knows how important it is for human beings to have peace and happiness and so he inspires Apostle Paul to write to the Colossians in chapter 3 verse 15 and says, let the peace of God rule in your hearts. One important thing that Jesus told his disciples while he was ascending to heaven was, “I am leaving you with a gift–peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid” (John 14:27).

Life is unpredictable. Wealth disappears, jobs end, relationships fail. Even health is not guaranteed. The good news is that we can experience inner peace that is not threatened by life’s challenges. The secret to this tranquility is surrender to the heavenly Father. Peace with God is the fruit of oneness with God. We experience calmness beyond human comprehension when we submit to His will and trust Him to provide for our needs.

We are all on a journey of learning to trust God every day; to surrender all of our ‘businesses’ to him. Don’t give up, press on. Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced every day. You certainly will get there.

In this piece, I also want to remind you that the decisions we make in our lives have a great bearing on our attitude too. In fact, life is a series of continuing decisions one after the other; whether small or big, important or less important. These decisions cover every part of our lives; you children, your finances, your health, your marriage, your career and every other aspect of your life.

My question to you today is; what is the determining factor in your thinking, your ambition that causes you to make certain decision? What is the bottom line?

I am here to help you understand that you are not going to stop making decisions because this is something we do until the last moment of our lives. What I want you to critically think about is; where does God lie in the decisions I make? Because every decision you make whether wise or unwise, there are going to be consequences. This therefore brings us to the earlier point I made of trusting God with the whole of your life and obey His Word because God takes care of every consequence that comes as a result of obeying Him.
Great things are done by a series of small things brought together. Remember that the willingness to do creates the ability to do. Just like Mahatma Gandhi said that, “A man is a product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes”.

Take small steps in trusting and relying on God and the peace that surpasses all human understanding will rule in your heart all of your days.
