Tanzanian Civil Society Organisations have voiced concerns over prolonged silence for the proposed new constitution, calling on President Dr Jakaya Kikwete to immediately organize a national constitution conference before the October general elections.

The conference should address burning issues like the referendum process.

Hebron Mwakagenda, Acting Chairman for the Tanzania Constitution Forum told Afrika Reporter there has been no updates concerning the constitution making process.

“The National Electoral Commission indefinitely suspended the referendum on grounds the voters register was not updated. NEC has already resolved that issue but still we are in the dark regarding the way forward,” he Mwakagenda said

He further said “Kikwete should not leave the public in suspense, he has to explain what is going on.”

NEC Chairman Justice (rtd) Damian Lubuva told this website Monday “the commission maintains its stance on the referendum as we announced earlier.”

According to the chairman, NEC shall announce the referendum date after consultations with its Zanzibar counterpart.

He said ongoing process includes finalizing the entire exercise to update the voters’ register.

Tanzanians are due to head to the polls in October to elect President Kikwete’s successor
