Former Tanzanian Prime Minister Edward Lowassa has officially announced he is running for president of the Republic of Tanzania. Mr. Lowassa announced Saturday he is seeking the ruling party Chama cha Mapindinzi’s (CCM) nomination for October presidential election.

Mr Lowassa, also Member of Parliament for Monduli appeared before his supporters at the Sheikh Amri Abeid Stadium in Arusha, and declared time for change has come. “There is no way Tanzania should remain dependent on donor aid, we have resources worth to take people out of abject poverty.”

“My focus will be to invest heavily in quality education. People need better health, access to social services including clean and safe water.”

Mr Lowassa, becomes the first CCM member to publically announce he is running for president.

He said the country needs a strong, dedicated, confident, assertive leader like him and one who can set goals and reinforce them

Mr. Lowassa is expected to be joined by the member of the East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) and son to Tanzania’s former leader late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, Charles Makongoro Nyerere in the fight for CCM’s nomination. Nyerere has indicated he will announce his candidacy soon.
