“People power, people’s power” has been the song the day former Prime Minister and Chadema, and UKAWA presidential candidate Edward Lowassa picked up his nomination forms at the National Electoral Commission in Dar es Salaam.

The former ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi(CCM) popular member has sent shockwaves within his former party by defecting to the opposition coalition after losing out on the nomination to Dr. John Magufuli.

Lowassa crossover has generated excitement as the opposition is upbeat they can finally deliver an upset against dominant and incredibly powerful CCM.

Armed police were patrolling around the city and all major roads to and from the Civic United Front (CUF) and Chadema to the city centre as supporters clad in chadema party and UKAWA coalition colours lined up the streets singing in unison “CCM MUST GO.”

Lowassa arrived at 1:30 pm at the National Electoral Commission to pick the forms. He was accompanied by his running mate Juma Haji Duni, Chadema senior leaders and national chairman Freeman Mbowe, CUF Secretary General Maalim Seif, NCCR-Mageuzi National Chairman James Mbatia and NLD Chairman Dr Emanuel Makaidi.

His supporters turned up in big numbers despite earlier warnings from the police urging the public not to congregate.

The presidential general election in Tanzania is due October 25.

Prior to shockingly losing out on CCM nomination, Lowassa was one of the favourites to represent the entrenched governing party in the forthcoming polls. His early elimination disappointed many CCM supporters around the country, and caused consternation within leadership ranks.

The opposition coalition formerly nominated Lowassa last week to be their flag bearer in the October poll.
