PLOTTING HIS DEFEAT: 4 opposition parties in TZ are joing forces to overcome CCM

Tanzania’s four main opposition parties under Coalition of Defenders of the People’s Constitution (Ukawa) are meeting in Dar es Salaam Tuesday to nominate one presidential candidate for the October 25 general election.

The parties are joining forces in bid to defeat the influential and popular governing Chama Cha Mapinduzi’s (CCM) recently nominated flag bearer Dr. John Magufuli

Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema), Civic United Front (CUF), National Convention for Construction and Reform – Mageuzi (NCCR-Mageuzi) and National League for Democracy (NLD) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), to field and support one candidate at all levels including presidential.

The political marriage, similar to what happened in 2002, in the East African nation of Kenya, is aimed at overcoming the ruling Chama cha Mapinduzi in the October polls.

CUF National Chairman has already nominated Professor Ibrahim Haruna Lipumba, the Chairman of the party to as their choice to represent the coalition in the forthcoming polls.

Prof Lipumba will have a lot of cajoling to do to persuade the parties to coalesce around him for the top political post considering his party’s general secretary Seif Sharif Hamad is tipped to become flag bearer for the coalition in Zanzibar’s presidential race.

Observers say Chadema stands a better chance to represent the coalition against a formidable challenge in Dr Magufuli and CCM October.
