The Ugandan Minister of Internal Affairs, and former army commander General Aronda Nyakairima has died of an apparent heart attack, aboard a Dubai-bound flight officials say.

Minister Nyakairima was Saturday morning transiting through Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), on his way back to Uganda from an official trip in South Korea.

“General Aronda died a board a flight from South Korea”, Pamela Ankunda, the ministry spokesperson told a local daily.

General Aronda Nyakairima served as Chief of Uganda Defense Forces for ten years before being appointed minister two years ago.

Nyakairima, 56, rose through the ranks to the helm of the Ugandan military and was inducted into the International Hall of Fame at the prestigious Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, United States in 2010 for serving in the highest position of his country’s military. He had graduated from the military academy in 1993.

Nyakairima was Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame’s best man at his wedding in the late 1980s when the current Rwandan leader was still serving in the Ugandan military.
