Zanzibar election re-run set for March 20

The Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) has announced March 20, this year as date for re-run for the Isles general elections.

ZEC Chairman Jecha Salum Jecha told reporters Friday preparations are going on well and all political parties should get ready for presidential, legislators and councilors general elections in March.

The date comes as two rival parties on the semi-autonomous island, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and Civic United Front (CUF) have failed to agree on the political roadmap in nine rounds of talks.

“There will be no political campaigns and all those who contested in the October 25, 2015 will be battling for the same posts,” Jecha said.

Prof. Chris Maina, a political analyst told Afrika Reporter Tanzania and indeed Zanzibar lacks an independent electoral body to facilitate free and fair elections.

According to Maina, the suspension of elections results in Zanzibar late October 2015 was partly due to lack of independent electoral commission to oversee the entire election processes.

Incumbent president Dr Mohammed Shein (CCM) and Seif Sharif Hamad (CUF), First Vice President and CUF Secretary General, Juma Ali Khatibu (TADEA) and Hamad Rashid Mohammed (ADC) will be duking it out for the Isles highest office.
